Heian Shrine

Heian Shrine

Heian Shrine (平安神宮) was founded in 1895 to commemorate the 1100 year anniversary of the relocation of the capital city to Heian-kyo and is dedicated to the 50th Emperor Kanmu. The main building of the shrine is a 5/8 sized version of the main palace of Heian-kyo. Shinen (神苑) is a garden that surrounds the shrine and consists of four gardens east, middle, west and south. The large Chisen Kaiyu style garden (approx. 10,000 tsubo) with a total area of 33000 square meters is a national scenic beauty. You can enjoy the beauty of each season with cherry blossoms in spring and autumn leaves in autumn.

Lots of omikuji are hung on the tree.
This is the reception desk at Shin-en during cherry blossom season, but there was a line. There were more than twice as many people lined up as in this picture.
