Shimogamo Shrine (Kamomioya Shrine)

The World Heritage Site “Kamomioya Shrine” is commonly known as called “Shimogamo Shirine” and is the oldest shrine in Kyoto. The three major festivals in Kyoto, Aoi Matsuri, are festivals at Shimogamo and Kamigamo shrines. The Mitarashi river on the grounds is famous for the origin of the “Mitarashi dango”.

There is a zodiac shrine in the precincts.
The Mitarai River (御手洗川) stands within the temple grounds. A nearby shop called Kamo Mitarashi Chaya is said to be the origin of Mitarashi Dango (みたらし団子).
A place where the pre-ceremony of the Aoi Festival is held.
