Kiyomizu-dera (清水寺) is said to have originated in 780 A.D., before the transfer of the capital to Heian-kyo, when SAKANOUE no Tamuramaro, who was visiting the area to hunt deer, met Kenshin (Later he changed his name to Enchin.), who was practicing asceticism, was preached on the sin of killing animals, and built a hall to enshrine Senju Kannon. The main hall has been burned down many times, but the current main hall was rebuilt in 1633 with donations from Tokugawa Ieyasu. Kiyomizu Temple, famous for its Kiyomizu stage, is a popular spot that attracts many tourists from all over the world.
