Tower of Yasaka (Hokan-ji)

Hokan-ji Temple is commonly known as Yasaka no To (Yasakanoto). In 592, It is said to be built by Prince Shotoku, and it has a long history since the Heian period. The five-story pagoda was destroyed by fire during the conflict between Kiyomizu-dera Temple and Gion-sha Shrine (Yasaka-jinja Shrine) at the end of the Heian period, rebuilt in 1191, and destroyed by lightning 100 years later in 1291. It was rebuilt in 1309 with the support of Emperor Gouda. The existing pagoda was destroyed by fire in 1436 and rebuilt in 1440 with the help of Yoshinori Ashikaga. The five-storied pagoda is 46 meters tall. The tower of Yasaka and the surrounding pure Japanese style building are tasteful. It is popular with tourists from overseas and many people visit to take pictures.
